
| Andrews Cove Trail Located near Helen Georgia, the 2.0 mile Andrews Cove Trail is rated Easy/Moderate and follows an old logging road up Andrews Cove to the Appalachian Trail and Forest Service Road 283 at Indian Grave Gap. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 5 miles. Turn right into the Andrews Cove Recreational Area. Anna Ruby Falls Length is .4 miles, Rated as Easy. The quiet coolness of the area is broken only by the thundering rush of water flowing over the rugged cliff face. A paved 0.4-mile footpath leads from the parking lot to the base of Anna Ruby Falls. Walking is easy to moderate and will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Benches are provided along the way. Walking shoes are recommended since the trail can be wet and slippery. The Lion's Eye Trail gives people who are blind or have visual impairments the opportunity to experience the environment along Smith Creek. Braille signs interpret various features of the area. Directions: Take Georgia 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 1 mile. Turn right on Georgia 356 for 1.5 miles, then left at the sign to Anna Ruby Falls. Follow this road for 3.6 miles to the parking area. Bottoms Loop Trail Located within Unicoi State Park, the 2.0 mile (loop) Bottoms Loop Trail is rated Moderate and is marked with a Yellow blaze Bottoms Loop Trail crosses several brooks before reaching Smith Creek and then back to the lodge. Unicoi State Park is located 2 miles northeast of Helen Georgia along Hwy 356. Dukes Creek Trail Length: 0.8 miles Rating: Easy Duke Creek Trail winds its way into Dukes Creek Gorge where it dead ends across from the 300 foot Dukes Creek Falls. Directions :Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 1.5 miles. Turn left on GA 356 (75 Alternate) and go 2.3 miles to the Russell / Brasstown Scenic Byway. Turn right, and go 2 miles to the Dukes Creek Falls Parking Area. Frog Pond Nature Trail Located within Unicoi State Park, the 0.3 mile Frog Pond Nature Trail is rated Easy and offers interpretive signs and tree identification signs. Unicoi State Park is located 2 miles northeast of Helen Georgia along Hwy 356. Horse Trough Falls Trail Length: 0.4 miles Rating: Easy. Peaceful and easy walk is to be taken at your own pace while enjoying every single second of the mesmerizing cascading falls. Horse Trough Falls Trail is an excellent trail for novice hikers. It leads to the beautiful Horse Trough Falls. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 8 miles to Unicoi Gap. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 44 (Chattahoochee River Road). Go approximately 4.5 miles to the ad of the river campground and follow signs to trail parking area. Lake Trail Located within Unicoi State Park, the 2.5 mile Lake Trail is rated Easy, marked with Yellow blazes and forms a loop around the edge of Smith Lake. Unicoi State Park is located 2 miles northeast of Helen Georgia along Hwy 356 Logan Turnpike Trail Length: 2.0 miles Rating: Strenuous. This former toll road of the 1800's crosses some of Georgia's most rugged terrain and accesses scenic Raven Cliffs Wilderness. A historical marker on the approach road to the trail head designates the toll keeper's house. Logan Turnpike Trail parallels Town Creek. The first mile is easy but the next is strenuous. This historic trail accesses the Appalachian Trail at Testnatee Gap. Caution: This trail is located in the Chestatee Wildlife Management Area which is open to various hunting seasons throughout the year. Directions: Take U.S. 19 north from Dahlonega, Georgia for 13.5 miles to Turners Corner. Turn right and proceed south on U.S. 129 for 2.8 miles. Turn left on Town Creek Road (paved first 1.5 miles) and go 2.8 miles. Parking area is at the wilderness boundary. Trail begins at the parking area. Raven Cliffs Trail Length: 2.5 mile Rating: Moderate The quiet coolness of the area is broken only by the thundering rush of water flowing over the rugged cliffs. Raven Cliffs Trail follows cascading Dodd Creek upstream to the cliffs. This trail is in the Raven Cliffs Wilderness Area. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 1.5 miles. Turn left on GA 356 (75 Alternate) and travel 2.3 miles to the Russel/Brasstown Scenic Byway. Turn right and travel to mile marker 3. Trail head is where Dukes Creek runs under the scenic highway. Parking is along the road Rocky Mountain Trail Length: 1.0 miles Rating: Moderate. Rocky Mountain Trail, in the green and lush woodlands, to the Rocky Mountain offers breathtaking panoramic views. Rocky Mountain Trail is blue-blazed and climbs gradually from Forest Service Road 283, Indian Grave Gap Road, to the Appalachian Trail (AT) on the side of Rocky Mountain. A 3.5 mile loop trail can be made by combining the AT, Rocky Mountain Trail, and Forest Service Road 283. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 11.4 miles. Turn right onto Indian Grave Gap Road, graveled Forest Service Road 283. At 1.5 miles, pass the parking lot for High Shoals Trail on the left; continue for 0.5 mile to trail head on the right. Parking is very limited at the trail head. For more parking continue up the road to Indian Grave Gap, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road. Forest Service Road 283 fords a shallow stream close to the beginning. It is often difficult to travel in winter without four-wheel drive. Smith Creek Trail Located within Unicoi State Park & USFS, the 4.8 mile Smith Creek Trail is rated Strenuous and is marked with a Light Blue blaze. Traveling from the campground at Unicoi State Park to the Anna Ruby Falls Recreation Area, Smith Creek Trail passes through stands of rhododendron and mountain laurel and to the headwaters of Smith Creek and York & Curtis Creek where Anna Ruby Falls is formed. Directions: Take GA 75 north from Helen, Georgia for 1 mile. Turn left on GA 356 and drive 1.5 miles. Then go left at the entrance to Unicoi State Park. Follow the signs to the Anna Ruby Falls parking area. Note: There is a parking fee. Hike a 0.4-mile trail to the falls. The trail begins to the right of the first observation bridge. Unicoi/Helen Trail Located within Unicoi State Park, the 3.0 mile Unicoi/Helen Trail is rated Moderate/Strenuous and is marked with a Green blaze. As it's name indicates the Unicoi/Helen Trail travels from Unicoi State Park to Helen Georgia. The trail starts as the Bottoms Loop Trail, then continues on to cross Lower Smith Creek and several small streams before reaching Unicoi Hill Park in Helen. Unicoi State Park is located 2 miles northeast of Helen Georgia along Hwy 356. |
